Occupational Exposure to Gasoline and Diesel Vapors and Its Effects on Blood Biochemical and Hematological Indices of Fuel Station Workers: Policy Brief

Abstract
Introduction: In this policy brief, the health implications of occupational exposure among fuel station attendants to gasoline and diesel vapors containing volatile organic compounds are examined. The expansion of fossil fuel consumption and continuous worker contact with these pollutants, in the absence of clear policy frameworks, may increase the risk of hematological disorders. To provide robust scientific evidence, 36 studies involving 2,244 exposed workers and 2,106 non-exposed individuals were analyzed. Findings indicate that long-term exposure to fuel vapors leads to reduced red blood cell indices and hemoglobin levels, along with increased white blood cell counts, platelet levels, and several hematological parameters; effects that intensify with longer exposure duration.

Based on these results, a set of policy options is recommended, including periodic monitoring of hematological indices for early detection of alterations, implementation of engineering controls to minimize occupational exposure, worker training and safety culture enhancement, use of personal protective equipment, shift optimization and reduction of exposure hours, improvement of workplace ventilation and filtration, restricted access to high-risk areas, provision of medical and nutritional support programs, documentation and follow-up of exposure incidents, and development of operational protocols for safe management of fuel vapor exposure. These strategies can enhance worker health protection and reduce occupational risks.
