Prevalence of antibiotic resistance in hospitalized patients with bacterial meningitis in Shahid Sadoughi hospital Of Yazd (2011-2022)

Abstract
Introduction

A large group of patients who are hospitalized with meningitis do not actually

have bacterial meningitis and are caused by viral agents, but are routinely

treated with antibiotics, which causes problems such as the emergence of

resistant bacteria. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate antibiotic

resistance in patients hospitalized with infectious meningitis.

Materials and Methods

This study was a cross-sectional study. The variables of this design included

age, gender, and underlying disease. The inclusion criteria included all patients

with meningitis whose diagnosis was based on LP analysis and culture, and the

exclusion criterion included incomplete patient records. The data of the design

were collected through census sampling and by referring to the records of

patients with bacterial meningitis hospitalized in Shahid Sadoughi Hospital,

Yazd from 2011 to 2022. In this study, the data were statistically analyzed

using SPSS VER 21.

Results

In all types of cultures (Streptococcus, Staphylococcus MSSA, Staphylococcus

MRSA and others), the highest resistance was related to penicillin and the

highest sensitivity was related to vancomycin. The most common complication

in children was seizures (55.3%) and in adults the most common underlying

disease was diabetes (59.4%).

Conclusion

All culture types (Streptococcus, Staphylococcus MSSA, Staphylococcus

MRSA, etc.) had the highest resistance to penicillin and the highest

susceptibility to vancomycin.
