Abstract
Diabetes mellitus has evolved into one of the most pressing strategic challenges for health systems worldwide. Beyond impaired glucose homeostasis, diabetes is characterized by complex metabolic, inflammatory, vascular, and oxidative alterations that contribute to long-term organ damage and chronic complications. The rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes, particularly in middle-income countries, reflects a broader epidemiological transition toward non-communicable diseases and imposes substantial economic and infrastructural burdens on national health systems.
In Iran, increasing diabetes prevalence—driven by urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, dietary transitions, and population aging—has significantly escalated healthcare demands and long-term treatment expenditures. Importantly, a considerable proportion of diabetes-related costs stems from chronic complications rather than glycemic control alone. Persistent oxidative stress and low-grade inflammation are central mechanisms underlying the progression of diabetic complications, highlighting the need for therapeutic strategies that extend beyond glucose reduction.
Chrysin, a naturally occurring flavonoid found in honey, propolis, and various medicinal plants, has attracted growing attention due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Experimental studies in diabetic models suggest that chrysin may improve metabolic parameters, attenuate oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory pathways implicated in disease progression. Although current evidence remains largely preclinical, these findings provide a translational foundation for further investigation
