Investigating the Validity and Reliability of the Short Mental State Test in People with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in the Iranian population. The MMSE is a common tool for early screening of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's. This study contributes to the expansion of knowledge in the field of cognitive assessment in Iran and can play an important role in improving the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive disorders in this country.

Methods: In this study, the English version of the MMSE was first translated into Persian, and after cultural adaptation, was administered on a sample of healthy individuals and those with Alzheimer's or mild cognitive impairment in Iran. Then, the psychometric properties of the test such as validity and reliability were determined.

Results: The results showed that the Persian version of the MMSE has sufficient validity and reliability. This test was able to significantly differentiate between healthy individuals and those with Alzheimer's. Also, the results showed a high correlation with other cognitive assessment tools.

Conclusion: This study shows that the Persian version of MMSE is a valid and reliable tool for early screening of cognitive impairment in the Iranian population. Using this test can help in early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive impairments.
