The effect of magnesium supplementation on lipid profile: A policy brief based on a systematic review and meta-analysis on randomized clinical trials

Abstract
Introduction:

Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the leading causes of mortality in Iran and worldwide, and risk factors such as elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL), reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL), hypertension, and diabetes play essential roles in their development. Existing evidence indicates that magnesium, as an essential micronutrient, may help prevent and manage cardiovascular diseases by improving lipid metabolism, increasing high-density lipoprotein levels, and modulating inflammatory and vascular processes. Findings from a systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by researchers at Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences show that magnesium supplementation—especially in individuals with chronic diseases—is effective in improving lipid profiles, particularly by increasing HDL levels, and that this effect generally requires doses exceeding 300 mg per day and a duration of more than three months. These results highlight the importance of nutritional interventions, healthy lifestyle education, screening programs, and insurance coverage for essential supplements, and can serve as a basis for policymaking to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases in the country.
