Introduction: Hemorrhoid is one of the most prevalent anorectal disorders associated with pain and bleeding. In Traditional Iranian Medicine (TIM), temperament plays a significant role in the onset and course of diseases; however, the temperamental pattern of patients who are candidates for hemorrhoidectomy has not yet been directly investigated. Therefore this study was conducted with the aim of determining the frequency of Mizaj (temperament) types and their associated factors among patients who are candidates for hemorrhoidectomy.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive–analytical study was conducted on patients who were candidates for hemorrhoidectomy and referred to Yazd Social Security Hospital. Data on demographic characteristics, patients’ temperament types, and related factors were collected. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 26.
Results: Among the 270 patients who were candidates for hemorrhoidectomy, 86.30% were female and 57.40% were unemployed. 74.40% consumed three meals daily, and 88.90% had fruit in their daily diet. More than half of the participants (55.90%) routinely consumed fast food. In the active temperament quality, cold temperament had the highest frequency (51.90%), and in the passive temperament quality, wet temperament was most prevalent (53%). Based on the nine-fold temperament classification, cold and wet temperament was the most common type (31.10%).
Conclusion: Cold and wet temperament was the most common temperamental pattern among patients candidate for hemorrhoidectomy and this finding could be a basis for further studies and investigation of its association with clinical indicators
