Introduction: Psychological capital helps an individual manage stress and improve overall life satisfaction. The aim of the present study was to investigate psychological capital and its determinants among students at Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 392 students of Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences in 2024 using stratified random sampling. Data collection was carried out using demographic characteristics and a psychological capital questionnaire consisting of 24 questions with 4 substructures of self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resiliency. Descriptive statistics (mean (standard deviation), frequency (percentage)) and analytical statistics (Generalized Linear Model) were used using SPSS software version 22 at a significance level of p < 0.05 to analyze the data.
Results: The mean (standard deviation) age of the participants was 22.05 (4.19). The mean total psychological capital score was 93.97 (15.70), and the highest and lowest mean scores for the substructures of hope were 24.24 (5.39) and optimism were 66.23 (3.94). There was a statistically significant relationship between the total psychological capital score of students and the variables of academic year, father's education level, presence of parents in the family, number of children in the family, having an underlying disease, economic status, residential status (dormitory and non-dormitory), and smoking (p<0.05).
Conclusion: By identifying students with low psychological capital at the time of entry through a combination of demographic data such as family, economic, and health variables and psychological questionnaires, targeted support interventions can be implemented for them.
