The Effectiveness of Imago Therapy on Forgiveness and Marital Empathy in Couples Applying for Divorce

Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Imago therapy on forgiveness and marital empathy in couples seeking divorce.

Methods: The research method was semi-experimental design using a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population induced all couples applying for divorce who referred to the Welfare Department of Mashhad in 2023. From this statistical population, using a convenience and voluntary sampling method and based on the scores of the Forgiveness Questionnaire (Pollard et al., 1998) and the Marital Empathy Questionnaire (Jolliffe and Farrington, 2006) in the pre-test, 30 individuals who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected to form the sample.

Results: The results of the study showed that Imago therapy significantly increased forgiveness and empathy in couples seeking divorce (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Therefore, we can say that Imago therapy is an appropriate approach to improve the relationships of couples.
